Economic situation and road transport costs in France
Changes in road transport costs over one year:
- The cost of diesel fuel continues to fall, down 7.7% for road freight transport and 8% for rail freight transport.
- Other costs (salaries, vehicle financing, insurance, etc.) are rising faster than general inflation, at around +2.5% for TRM (on average across the various activities studied) and +3.3% for school TRV.
For the French economy, mistrust among stakeholders remains high, and growth for 2025 is stagnating at +0.7% on an annual basis.

Changes in the range of TRM diesel indicators
By decision of its board of directors, the CNR will implement the following changes on 1 January 2026:
Official statement
The diesel indicators that remain freely accessible are professional indices that are useful and applicable within the framework of Article L3222-2 of the Transport Code on the propulsion energy cost items of the TRM. The implementation deadline adopted by the CNR authorities allows transporters and their customers to amend their contractual provisions if necessary.

Hungarian road freight transport
Since 2019, Hungary has been implementing a series of reforms to simplify its tax system and support its businesses.
The minimum wage has skyrocketed, rising by more than 50% over the last three years. To mitigate the impact on businesses, the social security contribution, which includes employer contributions, has been reduced to 13%.
With regard to road freight transport, the eco-driving bonus will be abolished in 2023 and replaced by a significant increase in travel allowances, with a minimum of 30% of the fixed salary.
Toll rates now include an environmental adjustment. Hungary has thus become one of the first EU countries to introduce an «air, noise, CO2» externalities component, which is added to the cost of infrastructure, significantly increasing the total amount.
In terms of costs, driver costs have increased by +25 % compared to 2019. Ultimately, operating costs have risen by +13 % in three years, now exceeding €1/km.

Subcontracting across the transport sector
Subcontracting across the transport sector
Subcontracting is sometimes a topic of debate due to its importance in transport, its conditions of execution, and its influence on market prices. In this regard, it is interesting to attempt an analysis of this phenomenon across the entire transport sector, encompassing all modes and activities, even if […]

Decoupling growth and mobility
Decoupling growth and mobility
In the European White Paper on Transport, decoupling growth and mobility is a priority objective. Noting the increasing growth in traffic flows, the European Commission is therefore proposing to make a break with the past in order to avoid congestion and environmental damage. However, the White Paper does not explain the underlying logic behind this approach.

European enlargement: the big bang?
European enlargement: the big bang?
In December, the European summit in Copenhagen officially decided to admit 10 new countries starting in 2004. Suddenly, the European Union grew by 75 million inhabitants, which is obviously considerable. That means more consumers, but also potential competitors. For transport, without accompanying regulatory measures, this could well constitute [...]

French competitiveness undermined by taxation
French competitiveness undermined by taxation
In the transport sector, it is commonly said that specific taxation is in line with the European average; this is not untrue, but it is insufficient to understand the loss of competitiveness of the flag. Ultimately, what matters is the overall level of taxation, which affects the cost of products [...]

How much does road freight transport weigh?
Road freight transport accounts for 871 billion tonne-kilometres of national freight transport and 61% of domestic road traffic. The sector employs more than 400,000 people and contributes 11% of French GDP. Road freight transport is undeniably a heavyweight in our transport system and our economy. However, the French road freight transport sector is eroding [...]

Large-volume skips
Large-volume skips
The transport of goods in large-volume skips is an important but still poorly defined market. It is a sector whose activity fluctuates with the seasons and where there are numerous technical constraints. In addition, competition is particularly fierce, which drives prices down. Transporters in the sector, composed of […]

The fall of the own account
The growth in public road transport activity (transport for hire or reward) is due to several factors: firstly, economic growth; secondly, the decline in the market share of rail and waterway transport; and finally, the fall in own-account transport. This fall is considerable in both absolute terms […]

French competitiveness threatened by working hours
The impact of working hours on the economy can only be assessed over time. Indeed, a sudden reduction in working hours can have immediate positive effects: job creation, better income distribution, reduction in unemployment benefits, revival of consumption, etc. However, in the longer term, the effect may be the opposite if this [...]

Regions: France still divided in two
To improve competitiveness, transport companies must pay close attention to ensuring a good balance of flows, as empty return journeys or insufficient loads can jeopardise the overall profitability of the trip. As a result, many companies, especially SMEs, are questioning the suitability of their branch locations, or even […]

Europe: what economic regulation for the TRM?
Europe: what economic regulation for the TRM?
The European White Paper on Transport sets out a number of new principles that have broad support, particularly the need for sustainable development. To this end, it proposes, in particular, the internalization of external costs. It is not unhealthy, quite the contrary, for prices to reflect the total costs [...]

Factors driving growth in the TRM sector
In an environment characterised by increased transport capacity, road transport is growing partly as a matter of course; however, this increase is also due to other factors. The first explanatory factor is a modal split that is more favourable to road transport. The second stems from the shift from private to public transport. The […]

SME networks in road freight transport
Faced with the power of large corporations, small businesses have found an alternative way to promote their services to shippers. Intermodality and structural changes in road freight transport markets
From an intermodal perspective, the question often arises of the possibilities for transferring from one mode to another or using combined techniques; the recent European White Paper raises this issue. Examining road markets over a long period of time provides a better understanding of developments in road freight transport. From this point of view […]

White paper: specific measures for the TRM
In thirty years (1970-2000), the number of cars on the road rose from 62 million to 175 million. Road traffic accounted for around 80% of the market share in 2000. Rail freight transport, for its part, accounted for just under 50% (45%). Every day, 10 hectares of land are covered by road infrastructure. Despite (or thanks to […]

TRM: in ten years, transport has lost between 251 and 301 billion pounds of its production value.
The profession has often emphasised the underpricing of its production. This argument is sometimes contested on the grounds that other sectors experience the same phenomenon. However, when all economic sectors are examined, it is clear that transport ranks at the bottom in terms of economic performance in terms of value growth.
